MAYAN RIVIERA

Tourist Guide

Xpu-Ha

Xpu-Há is on a small bay about 60 miles south of Cancún. You can get to the beach by going south down the Riviera Maya. At last count, there were five different turnoffs running from the highway to beach. The entrances are spectacularly marked just south of the resort community of Puerto Aventuras.

Pronounced ' ish-pooh-ha', the beach is a length of sparkling white sand. Around the bay's northern point is a lagoon, and slightly inland from that is the stunning Xpu-Há cenote.

The cenote is very long and narrow and reaches into the jungle for 500 meters. Its shape and size make it one of the Yucatan's most unusual cenotes. It only takes about 15 minutes to walk from the beach to the lagoon, then another 10 minutes to walk inland from the lagoon to the cenote.

There are also a few private homes at Xpu-Há Rustic cabañas can be rented by the day. There are two small cafes and several dive operators. These local divers are professionals who know the area well.

Posada Mariposa Hotel, Playa del Carmen Q. Roo, Mexico

Their favorite dive spot is a range of coral mountains about 20 minutes offshore. In addition to reef diving, there's cave diving or even diving in the region's cenotes guided by these guys who provide the specialized gear and the required training.

The waters right off the beach are great for swimming and snorkeling. Xpu-Há is a magical place, the kind of spot where you can get lost for days at a time. The ceviche (fish in lemon) and fried fish are excellent and the rental rates are quite reasonable.
