Valladolid is a city founded in 1543 by the Spanish Conqueror Francisco de Montejo, the nephew. It is situated in the State of Yucatan, 160 kilometers from Mérida, the capital of the State.

The ex-convent of Saint Bernandino of Siena is the most impressive monument of Valladolid for its size and construction. It is one of the most beautiful buildings of the colonial era.

 Its construction began in the year 1552, under the direction of the Franciscan Friar Juan de Mérida. The immense mass of this convent, the first constructed on American soil, was erected over the vault of the deepest and most wide cenote of the region. You can still see some of the original painting behind the altar piece on the side wall, as well as its ancient garden with its water wheel.

El ex-convento de San Bernandino de Siena es el monumento más impresionante de Valladolid por su tamaño y estructura, es uno de los edificios de mayor hermosura de la época colonial, cuya construcción se inició en el año de 1552, bajo la dirección del Fraile Franciscano Juan de Mérida.

La imensa mole de este Convento, el primero construido en el suelo americano, fue levantado sobre la bóveda del más profundo y extenso cenote de la región. Aún puede observarse algunas pinturas originales detrás de sus retablos, en las paredes laterales, así como su antigua huerta con su noria.

Definitivamente éste es el sitio de mayor importancia del área, no solo por su belleza, sino por el papel tan importante que desempeñó en la época colonial.
