Playa is perfect for enjoying the simple (and
perhaps the best) pleasures of a seaside vacation -- taking in the sun
and the sea air while working your toes into the sand; cooling down with
a swim in clear water; and strolling aimlessly down the beach while
listening to the wash of waves and feeling the light touch of tropical
breezes on your skin.
A strong European influence has made topless sunbathing (nominally
against the law in Mexico) a nonchalantly accepted practice anywhere
there's a beach. The beach grows and shrinks, from broad and sandy to
narrower with occasional rocks, depending on the currents and wind. When
this happens, head to the beaches in north Playa

The main activity in Playa is hanging out on the beach and enjoying the
Avenida 5 nightlife. But, as is the case just about anywhere on this coast,
you can always line up a snorkel or scuba trip. Snorkeling trips cost
around $30 and include soft drinks and equipment. Two-tank dive trips are
$55; resort courses with SSI and PADI instructors cost $75.
Day-trip possibilities include Xcaret, Xel-Ha, and Tulum.
The magnificent ruins of Chichén Itzá are 2 1/2 hours away. Several
agencies offer tours to these and other places; most run large tour buses
from the all-inclusive resorts in Playacar. They usually add stops
(sometimes welcome, sometimes annoying) at places where you can buy food,
drinks, or souvenirs.
For smaller tours, contact Tucan Tours or Balam Tours,
or book one of its tours through one of the local
travel agencies. In addition to trips to the ruins, These
Travel Agenvies offers adventure and ecological tours to places such as
Sian Ka'an.
